What the Heat Exchanger Does
The heat exchanger is a metal chamber separating combustion gases from your breathing air. Burners fire inside it, your home's air flows around it, and the metal transfers heat without mixing the two streams. A crack breaks that separation.
Signs Worth Taking Seriously
Soot streaks around the furnace cabinet, a sharp or unusual smell when the heat runs, visible rust or cracks on the exchanger, and the carbon monoxide detector alarming are all red flags. Flame behavior changes, like the burner flame flickering when the blower starts, also suggest a breach.
What to Do Right Now
If your CO detector sounds, leave the house and call emergency services first. For suspected but unconfirmed cracks, turn the furnace off and call (571) 561-3454 for inspection. Do not reset detectors and carry on.
How We Confirm It
We inspect with borescope cameras and combustion analysis, and we show you what we find. A confirmed crack means the furnace stays off until the exchanger or the furnace is replaced. There is no safe temporary fix.
Questions About Cracked Heat Exchanger
Can a cracked heat exchanger be repaired?
No. The safe options are exchanger replacement or furnace replacement. Patching is not a recognized repair.
How do cracks happen?
Years of overheating from poor airflow or oversized equipment stress the metal through thousands of heating cycles.
Will my warranty cover it?
Heat exchangers often carry longer manufacturer warranties than other parts. We check your coverage during the visit.
